Computers Need Cleaning This Spring, Too

SOUTHLAKE, TEXAS- With spring comes the traditional cleaning rituals. While many are sprucing up their living rooms and reorganizing their garages, grungy computers are often left neglected.

“Considering how often the average American uses their laptop or desktop computer and the expenses involved with owning one, it’s a little surprising that most people forget to clean them,” says Michael Young, a Southlake computer repair expert and the founder of Computer CPR.

With the right knowledge, physically maintaining your computer is practically effortless and will help maximize its lifespan. In all types of computers, collected dirt and dust may affect disk drives and USB ports, block filters and prompt the machine to overheat or crash. Keeping in mind the investment a computer necessitates, it’s important to keep all of its components healthy and dirt-free.

Computer CPR shares a few simple ways to keep every part of a computer in optimal condition. Before cleaning anything, however, turn the computer off and/or unplug it.

Screen

Achieving a clear and clean screen is as simple as turning on the faucet. Choose a soft, lint-free cloth and dampen with water. A paper towel will get the job done, but a cloth works better. Just be sure the cloth or paper towel is not dripping wet- computer parts and water don’t mix well. Using a circular motion, gently wipe the screen and allow it to air-dry.

Only use water when cleaning a computer screen. Chemicals found in many cleaning products can damage a LED screen. Also, never spray water directly on the computer. Only clean with a towel or cloth.

Keyboard

Air is the secret to a clean keyboard. Before sterilizing, use a can of compressed air to blow away hairs, dust, dirt and other debris. Then, take a damp (not soaking) disinfectant wipe and gently move over the keyboard. Dry the keys with a lint-free cloth.

The importance of regularly cleaning a keyboard extends past functionality and aesthetics. In a word, keyboards are gross.

Computer equipment houses a multitude of germs accumulated through daily actions. It’s not surprising, considering it’s not exactly customary for someone to wash their hands before or after typing. According to one study, a keyboard can harbor five times more germs than a toilet seat.

Mouse

The same cleaning guidelines can be applied to the mouse as the keyboard. Eliminate germs with a disinfectant wipe, then dry with a lint-free cloth.

It’s common for dirt and dust to collect on the inside of a computer, as well. This affects circuit boards and filters, which poses a serious threat to the computer’s wellbeing. The computer must be disassembled to clean, so Computer CPR encourages locals to allow them to do the dirty work. Their professionally trained IT consultants possess the know-how to carefully take apart and clean sensitive equipment. To inhibit buildup inside the machine, store computers in a clean, open environment.
