PointFire 2013 is an add-on to SharePoint 2013 that enables group collaboration in a multilingual environment facilitating cross border interaction where language differences play an important role on the team’s productivity.
The core benefit of PointFire 2013 is that it allows the users to access content in their selected language, under a friendly user interfase, without the making administrator translate independently multiple SharePoint sites, lists or libraries as required by SharePoint Variations.
An additional advantage is that no coding is necessary. The multilanguage customization can be handled within PointFire 2013 through its main elements that include: a multilingual management tool, language based web part display controls, tags for managing multilingual elements, translation controls for web parts, filters based on language for lists and libraries.
PointFire 2013 sits directly at the SharePoint server. With this integration it is possible to compare in real-time the strings of characters sent by SharePoint to different computers. Whenever PointFire finds a match to one of its entries, it replaces it with the equivalent word in the other language.
In order to illustrate this, we can use the next scenario. When using SharePoint’s capabilities to provide translations, manual work is needed. For example, creating a new column within a list or library might require a different name in English or in other language. With the SharePoint native solution, when creating a column, the column’s name should be edited separately while being at the language's interface, in the library settings and in the quick launch menu editing screen.
Whe using PointFire 2013, the integrated dictionaries provide the translation in both languages at once. Translation is handled automatically without the need of separately editing any addiitonal language interfase. To add or change a translation it is only necesary to edit the multilingual translations list and make the adjustment, this will apply at any site or list where PointFire is activated.
In order to enhance the multilingual functionality for a site or a site collection, each property can be defined by the administrator. Sites within a site collection can inherit these settings from the top-level site. Alternatively, inheritance can also be broken to so the settings are adpoted to the site and subsite requirements.
PointFire can be used in 32 different languages, ranging from Arabic to Turkish. Each language is supported by a specific language pack that can be downloaded from the vendor’s website. For the time being, it is only available for on premise installations, however a version working on Office 365 cloud is scheduled to be ready for 2014.
