After turning on the system you find that Windows is refusing to boot. This is a genuine indication which happens due to several reasons. You can start troubleshooting.
The latest Windows versions in this regard can easily recover from this. Windows XP might have altogether stopped tracks when you are facing a problem. These versions would automatically run the option startup repair.
You have to sure about the changes recently made. Have you installed any new hardware driver or tried to connect the component to the system or even open the case and do things accordingly. May be that hardware is not compatible or a major component has been unplugged.
The Computer Won’t Power On At All
If your computer would not power then check whether it has been plugged into power vent or not. Also check whether the connector is not loose. See to it that power switch on back of case or on the power supply is properly placed or not. In case it does not power at all you disconnect a power cable inside case. In case you have not touched the case then possibly the power supplied has died down. You would have to get the hardware set or buy a new one.
Ensure that you can check the system monitor if the system might power but even then the screen is black. Do ensure that the monitor has power and the cable which connects it has been plugged at both ends.
In case power has come back but you get a black screen saying that “no bootable device” or another “disk error” message then the computer would not boot from hard drive where Windows has been installed. Enter the computer’s UEFI firmware or BIOS system screen and confirm the setting of boot order. This would ensure that it would boot from hard drive.
In the list if the hard drive is not visible, it is possible that a failure has occurred and cannot be booted from. You can insert recovery disk or Windows installation and run startup repair operation. This would help it to boot again. Ensure to check your UEFI’s boot order or BIOS in case the recovery environment refuses to load.
You can manually fix Windows boot loader problems with the help of fixmbr and fixboot commands. Modern versions can mend the problem with the Startup Repair wizard. In case Windows starts and fails in the midway then it is either software or a hardware problem. If it is a software issues then you can fix it by performing a Startup Repair operation. This can be done by inserting a Windows installation disc or a recovery disk and use startup repair tool. In case this is not enough then reinstall Windows or even execute reset or a refresh on Windows 8.
If the system comes across errors then you are most probably trying to reinstall Windows or execute startup repair when you are trying to reinstall Windows or perform startup repair and if the problem persists then it is a hardware issue.
If crash occurs whenever it boots then it is a software or hardware problem. You boot Windows in safe mode. In this Windows would not load hardware drivers or software which automatically starts at startup. If the system is stable in safe mode then try to uninstall the software which has been installed recently executing a system restore and scanning for malware.
The problem persists then reinstall Windows or perform a reset or Refresh on Windows 8. This resets the system back to default factory state. If you are experiencing crashes then the issue is that of hardware. In case there are important files which would be lost and want to have a backup prior to reinstallation of Windows then you can use Linux or installer disc to recover files. These are executed from a DVD, USB drive or CD and allow to copy files to another external device.
If these steps are followed then most of the Windows Boot Issues would be fixed at least those which can be fixed.
