House Music - One of the Most Popular Genres of Electronic Dance Music.
Where was House Music born and where did the term house music come from ? We need to look at the History of House Music to understand where it all began and why we now refer to this genre of electronic dance music as "House".
Where was House Music Born ?
"House" Music started in the early 1980s in Chicago, Illinois. House music all began in Discoteques that catered for various communites from Latino Americans to African Americans and everything in between. Eventually House Music made its way into Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City and also Miami. It reached the main parts of Europe in the Lates 1980s and became main stream Globally in the 1990s.
Where did the term House Music come from ?
As you can understand, there are many different theories which claim to answer this question of why this Genre is labelled as "House" Music but the most popular and widely accepted is as follows. The term House Music originated from a Chicago Based nightclub called "The Warehouse" which ran from 1977 to 1982. The resident Dj at the time was Frankie Knuckles. During an Interview for a Documentary, Frankie stated that he and his friends once passed a sign that said "we play house music" and Frankies Friends joked with him that this was the type of Music that Frankie Played at the Warehouse.
Other Cases where some believe House Music Came From :
- In 1985 Chip E released a recording entitled "Its House" and many believe this played a big part in where the Term House Music came from. During the same year Street Mix Magazine declared Chip E as the "Godfather of House Music"
- The man himself Chip E, stated that the name "House Music" originated from when he was at record stores in Chicago he would see Music Bins full of Records that were clearly marked "as heard at the warehouse" (The Nightclub Mentioned earlier) and this term was eventually shortened to "House".

House Music is now recognised Globally as one of the leading Genres in Electronic Dance Music. As a result many sub-genres have emerged including Tech-House, Electro-House, Hard-House, Deep House and many more. House Music not only paved the way for other sub-genres to emerge but also opened the door for other Genres such as Techno which is now also one of the leading genres in electronic music.
As we look at the History of Electronic Dance Music its important to acknowledge that "House Music" may be the Foundation that built it all. House Music has made its way from the underground rave scene all the way to mainstream commercial platforms. Electronic Dance Music is no longer just a scene ... its a way of life.
