Although the same application is dealt with during the development and testing processes, each process must be performed in separate environment. It is essential to dissociate testing environment from the developing environment.

Video cards can be tricky business. There are a huge number of them to choose from that range in price from somewhat affordable all the way to sell-your-first-born-child expensive. This only makes finding the one just right for you that much more difficult.

What’s more is once you get your painstakingly picked graphics card in your hands you then have to: open up your PC, get the old video card out of there, get the new one installed, close the PC back up, and finally boot up your PC with your shiny new video card snugly inside.

But, what do you find when you turn on your PC? Your computer turns on, and you see everything behaving normally save for one bizarre thing. Everything looks really fuzzy and really low resolution. What’s happened? Did you install the video card wrong?

You begin to your hunt around the worldwide web to find… your video card drivers are out of date! How obnoxious! Now, after all this work you have to do more research to figure out how to update your graphics drivers even after all the hard work you’ve put into buying and installing the card.

Well, search no further, dear reader. I’ve done all the research you’ll need and I’m here to show you how to update video card drivers for your video card.

Drivers Are A Solution for PC Gaming Woes, Too

Now perhaps you didn’t just buy a new graphics card. Perhaps you were hoping to play the latest and greatest computer game (or another new, graphics heavy application) but it just isn’t working right with your PC. Updating your video card drivers should be among the first things you should try. I know it’s definitely my first go-to solution when troubleshooting gaming and application problems.

No matter what your issue, getting those video card drivers up to date is a good a habit to keep your PC in shape; something you should look into if you’re looking to learn more about your PC.

A Short Quest For A Name

The first question you must ask yourself is, “what kind of video card do I have?” You must know the manufacturer of your GPU in order to obtain drivers and there are a couple of ways to go about this.

If you just bought your card or built your own custom PC (perhaps by following these guides) you should be able to look at the box it came in, or at least find the purchase receipt and find the name of your card there.

If you don’t have either of these, or you just don’t know the name of your card then follow these steps.

For Windows 7:

1. Open the start menu, type in the search bar: “Device Manager” (Don’t include the quotes), and click on the result named “Device Manager”

2. In the window that pops up find the entry called “Display adapters” and expand this entry using the arrow just to the left of “Display adapters”

3. The entry that shows up after expanding “Display adapters” is the name of your video card. Remember this name!

For Linux:

1. Open the terminal and type lspci –v

2. Look for an entry beginning with “VGA compatible”

3. The entry on this line is the name of your graphics card. Remember it!

Where To Go, How To Get There

What happens next depends on the results of the short search you just did. Each manufacturer keeps their driver downloads on their respective website. The result you found above should begin with the manufacturer that made your card. This is the name you are especially interested in.

So, skip to the section titled after your video card manufacturer to get your drivers downloaded and installed.

Intel

1. Do a Google search for “Intel Driver Update Utility” and open the first link

2. Towards the middle of the page is a blue button named “Check your system for updates.” Click this button

3. When the site finishes checking for available drivers for your graphics card, it will automatically display the results. Find the section titled “Graphics Driver” and expand it

4. In the box that appears, click the “Download Now” button towards the right and save the file that appears

5. When the download finishes, open the executable and follow the instructions given

6. After the installation finishes, you can repeat steps 1 through 3 and check that the expanded box now says “Your driver is current.”

7. Your drivers are now installed!

AMD

1. Do a Google search for “AMD Graphics Drivers and Software” and open the first link

2. Follow the steps (1 through 5) to pick out the graphics card you found in the section above

3. After clicking “Display results” click the Download link for “Catalyst Software Suite”

4. When the download completes, open the program and follow the instructions for installation

5. Your drivers are now installed!

Nvidia

1. Search Google for “Download NVIDIA Drivers” and open the first link

2. On this page, find Option 2 and click the button under this heading on the right labelled “Graphics Drivers”

3. Allow the Java program to run and determine the necessary drivers

4. If the Java program cannot find your driver, use Option 1 to fill out the information about the video card you found in the last section

5. Select the driver that Nvidia has found for you, click the “Download” button and allow the file to download

6. When the download completes, run the downloaded program and follow the instructions to install the drivers

7. When the installation is complete, you’re done. You’ve updated your drivers!

Solid State Hard Drive Technology

In this article, I will talk about solid state hard drives. I will also explain some other facts related to SSD hard disks.

Solid State, also known as SSD are the latest media that is being used for storage. These drives do not used traditional parts like heads, platters or motor spindles. These hard disks consist of memory chips, a controller and a system board. The read and write operation in these drives, is fast compare to regular media devices. Data is stored in multiples chips installed on an electronic board. Data in memory chips is controlled by another chip called controller.

Many companies make SSD drives but the actual chips are manufactured by just a few companies. A flash drive and an SD card is a type of SSD family. A USB flash drive works the same way as an SSD drive. There are mainly two differences between an SSD and flash drive. The first one is the connection interface which is a USB (slower) compare to a sata connection (faster) on solid state media. The second one is the memory capacity. SSD can save larger amounts of data while a flash drive has limited storage. There is one more minor difference between the two and that is, a flash drive or SD card have limited number of (one to two) memory chips while solid state has more (four to sixteen).

Solid State drives are expensive. This is due to two reasons. First, it is a new technology and second, it is more attractive to users because of its speed which means there is more demand for them. If a computer’s operating system is installed on an SSD, it will load fast. It’s also stronger against unexpected moment. Unlike other traditional hard disks, these drives have no moving heads and motor which makes them reliable in the sense that in the event of accidental physical moment, heads will not crash on platter (making them unrecoverable when it comes to data recovery).

Solid State media is being used in Apple’s Mac computers like iMac, MacBook Pro, Mac mini etc. Flash media is also being used in iPhone and iPads in addition to Microsoft PC desktops computer and laptops. The future of SSD is not clear. If improved, this technology will slowly take the place of traditional hard drives. It will be used in Raid arrays, network storage access devices, servers and obviously more and more in computers and laptops. But in case of no improvement like reliability, safety, it may be a complete failure. The prices also needs to go down because the more expensive this technology is, the less will be the demand.

There are several drawbacks of these drives. Operational reliability is the number one bad aspect. We think that these drives are safe and nothing will happen to them. It’s not right. These hard disks work the same way the traditional hard drives work. These have power and electronic boards. These use indexes and table the same way like others. The data can go corrupt as a result of controller malfunction or any other reason. The tables can be damaged. The controller can be bad as a result of power surge.

The data in the memory chip can vanish because of electromagnetic forces. The board can go bad as a result of design flaw or power problems. These drives are usually hard to repair. There is no guarantee of data retrieval after a long period of time because the data may disappear automatically. Data recovery from these SSD drives can be very expensive because of readability problem of multiple chips and other drawbacks. It is possible that with the passage of time, new data recovery tools will be developed which will help make them popular like other drives. And yes, this media is expensive at the moment. There are so many other problems with this technology because it is not mature yet.

Canon's New EOS D70 Challenges The Nikon D7100

If you're a camera enthusiast, then you're probably aware that the Nikon D7100 has won two prestigious awards by being voted as the best camera 2013 - 2014 by both EISA and TIPA.

Canon has recently released its EOS D70 and with its many exciting new features, supporters of this new model are convinced it is going to be a front-runner for the prestigious top camera of the year 2014 -2015 awards.

It was release world wide in July of 2013 and replaces the 60D model.

Amazing Features

The D70 is Canons newest mid-range DSLR and features a 2.0 megapixel sensor, full high-definition video, a touch-screen monitor, built-in Wi-fi capabilities, and a new system for autofocusing that's promised to deliver superior performance during both Live View and movie shots.

Another improvement that Canon has focused on with this release is the AF micro adjustment, which boosts continuous shooting.

However, the headline feature that's going to make this camera stand out is the 20.2 megapixel CMOS sensor. These allow 80% of pixels on the sensor to also be used as phase-detect AF points.

Basically, this is one of the most exciting DSLRs on the market today and it offers a challenge not only to the D7100, but also many other supposedly superior models currently on the market.

Small Changes

In addition there are some basic feature changes which are designed to make this model user-friendly, for both the avid and novice photographer.

The 70D has a simple control that lets you enter Live View and the movie mode. It's a button which can be used to switch between options and works very well and I think is a great asset.

There is also a simple mode dial and a new AF area button.

The touch-screen is a huge improvement.

This mid-range DSLR camera will now also appeal to many professional photographers.

Some differences between the D7100 and the D70

First, the screen on the Canon is fully articulated which allows users to flip it out and twist to any angle. This is a huge asset when taking shots from an awkward angle where you need more versatility.

The touch-sensitive screen is the second benefit that's going to make it a great option.

You can now tap through the menus, swipe and pinch during playbacks and also tap to focus anywhere on the screen no matter what you happen to be shooting.

Upcoming Changes

The world of photography is always changing, and camera manufacturers are usually working towards coming out with the next best thing.

Currently, the newly released Canon 70D appears to be aiming to become the top model in the mid-range DSLR market and only time will tell if it succeeds.

The camera definitely offers a very serious challenge to Nikons D7100 comparative model which is excellent for all photographers since it will keep manufactures in the photography business to remain extremely competitive and at the same time improve and deliver on their new innovations.

For users who love versatility and high-quality photography, this challenge is going to be a great big bun fight that will truly benefit the SLR consumer.

What's the Difference Between Linux And Windows 7?

Choosing an operating system (OS) for your PC is a very important step in the process of building your computer. The operating system you decide upon is one that will likely last well into the lifetime of your PC. This is why it is important to be well-informed about the options available to you. There is a lot of information out there on this topic and it can be easy to get lost. So, to assist you in alleviating this issue, I offer to you a straight forward comparison between two of the most popular operating systems for a PC, Microsoft Windows 7 and Linux.

Before we get started I would like to mention that both operating systems have numerous versions of software available (a fact I address further down). Much of the following article, unless otherwise noted, deals with features that are universal for the given OS. Since many differences between versions of an OS tend to be minor, they fail to add much to today's broader discussion. Without further delay, let’s get into it!

Providing facts and leaving opinions at the door

Both Windows 7 and Linux have strong followings that have many devotees that will defend their OS of choice to the bitter end. They will do everything in their power to persuade you that their operating system is far superior to whatever the “competition” has to offer. This makes those looking for unbiased information on the topic somewhat difficult at times. Therefore, my goal here is to offer just that: a factual look at what both operating systems have to offer to users. We will start our comparison with an element that is sure to be towards the top of anyone’s list of important features: price.

Price, or why pay for what you can get for free?

Right off the bat we can see Linux offers a deal that Microsoft simply cannot match: The Linux operating system is 100% free. There is absolutely no personal information needed - not even a credit card - to access the files for installing many versions of Linux on your PC. Though the proper files can take some searching to find because there are so many versions of Linux available (a factor we will get to in a moment). It is worth mentioning that there are several variants of Linux that require purchase. Although the consensus is that paying for the software is only to support Linux developers and the additional charge does not yield many more features.

Microsoft, on the other hand, charges for full usage of their Windows 7 software. There are several versions of Windows 7 available, and the price ranges from about 100 to 120 dollars for the basic, “Home Premium” edition all the way up to around 180 to 200 dollars for the “Ultimate Edition” (Prices taken from Amazon marketplace).

Security: What to do when viruses are out to get you?

Throughout the years Windows has been notorious for being vulnerable to malware and viruses. But, the security available for the OS has been improving by leaps and bounds with the latest iteration, Windows 7. There are a plethora of paid and free security options that provide excellent security for a Windows 7 machine. While this doesn’t make the Windows environment anything close to virus free, you can remain well protected by taking proper precautions. However, Windows 7 cannot ever hope to beat the integrated security of the Linux OS.

There are a couple factors that explain Linux’s superior security. First, many of the applications can be downloaded through an official source that guarantees authenticity of your files. Secondly, the Linux user base is considerably smaller than the Windows 7 user base. This leads to malicious intent being targeted to Windows, and Linux remaining a much smaller target for virus creators. Finally, there are several organizations making use of Linux’s open source nature to constantly check and recheck the integrity of available OS files in order to reduce the chance of users downloading a virus riddled copy of Linux. Now, none of this is to say Linux is a completely virus free OS, it merely has far fewer viruses than Windows 7.

Open source or commercial? How much customization do you want in your life?

Linux is an open source operating system. This basically means anyone (including you!) can download the Linux source code and modify it as they see fit to create their very own version of Linux (the most popular of which being Ubuntu). There are entire websites dedicated to just keeping track of the different versions available. Though despite their best efforts, these sites can’t possibly manage a fully inclusive list as there are just far too many versions of Linux to track such as those that only a couple of users make use of.

Windows 7 is very close to the complete opposite end of the version spectrum. Being a commercial product, with six primary editions, Windows 7 has far fewer options of operating system customization. Although, discerning between different available OS’s can be made simpler in this way. You’ll find that as you work your way up the available upgrades for Windows 7 (from Starter to Ultimate), the additional features you receive for upgrading become less relevant to the average user. The outlier to this is the Starter edition which is extremely limited. Every version beyond that (starting with Home Basic) contains a similar core Microsoft Windows experience, but Ultimate (the top tier) contains every bell and whistle Microsoft has to offer. To discuss every difference between every available option for both Windows 7 and Linux would require a whole mountain of articles in itself and does not lend itself to our overview.

Software Support: What do you spend your time doing?

When it comes to sheer numbers, Microsoft’s operating system has far more software available for its operating system than Linux. Plus, due to the substantial lead Windows 7 has over Linux in number of users, you are more likely to find support for a given Windows application when things go wrong. You can even call Microsoft for OS support and talk directly to an agent who will assist in remedying your issue. Coupled with a large online crowd-sourced support database, help is within reach for many issues with Windows 7. That being said, if you are the do-it-yourself type, Linux offers a wide variety of customization if you are looking to modify software to fit your specific needs. In addition, there is also many references and reading material available to help troubleshoot issues.

Hardware Support: What are you hooking up to your PC?

If you are on a Windows 7 PC, there is usually very little reason to worry about hardware such as keyboards, mice, graphics cards, etc. not being able to talk to and play nice with your operating system. This is because such hardware is engineered with the assumption at least someone will want to use the product on a Windows machine. The same generalization cannot be made for Linux users. Due to the small number of Linux users in comparison to the rest of the available personal computer market, it is common to see business decisions made that forego testing a product on Linux machines.

The Choice is Yours

I hope this article can help you more clearly see the benefits and drawbacks of the Linux and Windows operating systems. They both offer great solutions to your operating system needs and there is simply no clear cut “winner.” Whether its price, customization, security, or compatibility, your operating system decision hinges on what you are looking for from your PC experience.

Graphene is as thin as Seran Wrap and upwards of 200 times stronger than steel (if steel were put into a sheet that thin). Lets put this statement into prospective. According to Graphene Industries, it is strong enough to make an elevator tube into space, let that soak in.....ELEVATOR TO SPACE! I just hope they have better music than the elevators I've been in.

The best explanation for the strength of a sheet of graphene is this from a BBC News story by Alex Hudson. "It would take an elephant, balanced on a pencil, to break through a sheet of graphene the thickness of Saran Wrap [cling film]."

Remember the film that Superman threw on the General Zod? WEAK compared to graphene.

And it's Fast!

Well that's about it.....ya right. Not only is it insanely strong but since there is no break in the sheet it conducts electricity 200 times faster than the silicon that we find in our electronics now. The conductive power of this amazing material is insane, imagine taking the fastest computer that we can have at home, now take out your calculator for effect...multiplied by 200.

I don't know if that's going to be good or bad, I mean I have gotten so impatient as technology becomes faster that I sometimes find myself huffing if it takes more than two seconds to load a page on the internet. With graphene I might throw my computer because immediately just isn't fast enough.

Almost Forgot, Flexible

10, 10, 10 , 10, 10 Those are the numbers you would see if graphene went to the Olympics as a gymnast. We are talking about phones that wrap around your wrist like a silly band, can be folded like paper, how about rolling it up and putting it behind your ear. Ya that's the kind of flexibility I'm talking about. Maybe soon we will just stick a film on our wall and have an amazing television.

This new material is strong, fast, light, and super resistant to corrosion. The creators already won the Pulitzer Prize and a 1 billion euro grant. That means that it is the REAL DEAL. Docking A Sailboat Under Wind Power

I’ve sailed my boat into the dock more times than many people have had hot dinners. And I do it for a several reasons: (1) I love doing it (2) It’s a good skill to have for WHEN (not if) the engine won’t start (3) There is peacefulness about ending a sailing trip in this manner and (4) it always impresses a landlubber.

It’s probably not something that you should do if you’re just learning to sail but as you grow your sailing skills it’s something that you should certainly adopt.

You can start out to learn how to sail with this this docking skill by using a mooring buoy, channel marker, or race marker and setting up a pretend scenario about how your fictitious dock might align next to the floating object with various wind directions.

The biggest trick is understanding your boat’s momentum. And if you don’t understand it then you’re about to do damage. This is why I advise learning where you can’t hit anything except pretend docks.

Once you’ve dowsed your sails and the wind is acting solely on your boat hull, you’ve also got to understand how your boat slows with the wind speed and direction. I.E. Going down wind, your boat will take a long time to slow down. Going upwind, your boat slows comparatively faster. Also remember that force is proportional to the square of the velocity. So in fact, going downwind, your boat might not slow down at all. In this case you’ll have to bleed off speed by turning the boat side to side.

The set up:

As you approach your marina, you need to make your plan.

Factors to consider are:

• Wind speed and direction: How will the wind direction affect your approach will it speed up your boat or slow it down and by how much?

• Other boats: Is there other moving traffic in the marina?

• Obstacles: Is there anything in front of you when you come to your final resting position and how expensive is it?

• Your crew: How experienced are they, can they get the sails down when you tell them to, tack the boat with out your instruction, anticipate the situation, get dock lines tied to the dock and boat to stop forward motion.

• Which sail will you use?

• You final approach: Will you make a turn onto final? What wind direction will that be?

Certainly if any of these are out of alignment of you be able to execute the docking maneuver perfectly then you should abort the attempt and do it another day.

Sailing with the headsail only is quite advantageous when docking under sail. You can make easy adjustments and let it flap if you want to reduce speed. The disadvantage is that you may have to gybe or tack at the last minute, which creates a bit of extra stuff going on in the cockpit when you might not need the distraction. Take this into account when making your plan.

A roller furling headsail is pretty cool because you can adjust the driving force until the last minute.

Even at a close reach it’s hard to remove the power out of the mainsail when you let it out all the way. So if you’re going to be docking downwind or anywhere downwind of a close reach, you have to assume that you might not reliably get down your mainsail at the last minute. Therefore, get your mainsail down way in advance and just use your headsail.

When docking upwind, perhaps your mainsail is the best choice because it doesn’t necessarily need to be lowered. The boom can be let out to allow the sail to flap. It’s best to come in under one sail so if you’re going to use the mainsail – get the head sail down and out of the way.

If you need to make a turn at the last minute to align with the dock then consider the wind direction and wind speed prior to the turn versus the momentum of your boat.

How is the wind direction considering your final landing position? If it’s going to be blowing you off the dock then it’s a good idea to approach at an angle so that you control your position to the dock at the very last minute rather than allowing the wind to blow you away from the dock.

If the wind direction will blow you onto the dock then a flatter approach will mean you’ll pick up less speed from down wind approach.

Have your crew positioned and fully understanding what they must do. Often the most important job is to get the back of the boat cleated to the dock fast to prevent the boat hitting anything in front. Assign your best crew member to this function. Ensure that they know how to tie a cleat hitch and that they are not going to just step off and try to stop the boat by pulling on the dock line in their hand.

Ensure every one knows to keep limbs clear of the boat. Assign crew with roving fenders. Unclip line lines so that crew can step onto the dock easily with out lifting feet over the lifelines at the last minute. Ensure that everyone knows not to jump off the boat to the dock – which they only move when they can step off. All of this is why you must start the plan out of the marina so that you have plenty of time. One thing is for sure, in the last few seconds, you have no time.

Finally, most of the time, I’m practicing the sailing into the dock maneuver with the engine on. Thus if anything goes wrong in those last few seconds I have the back up of the engine to take over.

The key here is to dock your boat with out damage. So prudence is vital. You might consider parking it at the tee head of the dock rather than in your slip. Or you might consider facing it a different direction than you normally do just because of the wind direction. The goal is to get the boat tied up in a manner you’re most comfortable with and deal with moving the boat afterwards.

My Review on Windows 81

Being an IT student, helps out a lot. And of course, most of you have to wait until October 18th. I'm happy to say that I was one of the few people that was able to get Windows 8.1 Professional before the general public. I mean, before I just had 7 Home Premium--and to go to Windows 8.1 Pro, yeah, it's been over 2 years, it's time for clean up and re-install.

Here's my review:

It's definitely a lot like Windows 8, so don't start thinking it's something "magically" different. One of the main things that is different is that there's a "Start" button on the left hand side--on your desktop, kind of like Windows 7. Then you arrow down to see different programs that are running, or programs that you may want to run in the future. I like it for having something different, but Windows 7 is still a prime OS, and a lot of people don't like the 8. But, because of the changes from 8, people may have a change of heart.

I have no problems going around the different views from the from part of the computer screen. You do have like 25 different boxes to choose from: Your Desktop, Weather, Store, IE, Calendar, Photos, alarm clock, games, calculator, movies, headline news, sports, and whatever different types of apps you may have added to it.

Still in essence, it's still a lot like Windows 7, but with lots of extras. The arrow in the left hand side is where you go to all of your programs. It's kind of like having the tablet on your PC. I guess if you don't like change, then stick with Windows 7--it's great and I still like it, I just like learning it. And, because I fix and repair computers, set up, etc, it's always great to know what's there, and it's installed on all the laptops today, and desktop computers that are sold--that's unless you buy a custom computer, in which I build--but we're not talking about that now.

The Great news is that for you people that already have Windows 8 on your computer, it's a a free update--and yes, it should be. No need for you to be concerned about purchasing more software from Microsoft. In fact, on Microsoft's website you can get that download for free. But is not going to have it's full release until October 18th, 2013--Only about a week away. You've waited this long, it will go quickly and you will have it.

Start up times are supposed to be faster, and for those who have a laptop, the battery time should go longer--depending upon the manufacturer of the battery.

Extra special perks: IF you have a touch screen, it's really cool on what you can do. Literally, touch it, move things around on your screen, just like a tablet--but if you got a large 24"-Inch screen such as I, well, that's like 4 iPads all together--and of course, did I tell you I have 2 monitors--and some people have 3!

It's a cool OS, I think in my opinion. So, here's the Pros and Cons:

Pros: It's New and exciting, has different options, is quoted to give better speed, less energy, and the option of the "start" button on the desktop. It's performance is to be sensational, and for change, I like it myself.

Cons: If you don't like change, you may not like it. That's OK, for those who have PC's with older OS's, stick with Windows 7, XP, heck, even go with your 2000 or 98!

Bottom Line: IF you're going to buy a new laptop, most likely it's already going to have it on there. There's no getting around it. If you're buying a desktop, unless you have a custom specialty computer made, then you don't have much choice. You can buy the operating software, but why? If after a while you don't like it, then wipe it off your computer and go back to Windows 7.

Just another note: IF you purchase a customer computer, make sure you have the COA, or Certificate Of Authentication on it, otherwise you could be getting a pirated operating system on your investment.
